Why UV Protection?

Recent studies show that the earth only absorbs a part of UV Rays known as UVC. Harmful UVB and even more damaging UVA Rays penetrate the unprotected eye's cornea, ocular lens and retina causing irreversible damage. People who work outdoors or near water may be especially susceptible to harm from UV. Higher altitudes may also increase exposure to UV Rays.

UV rays are a real danger!

What about sunglasses?

Whether sunglasses are plain or prescription, they do not offer protection from harmful UV Rays just because they have dark lenses. All sunglasses must have a UV protection coating to protect your eyes from these harmful rays.
Today sunglasses come in many designer styles. We carry such designer brands as Ray Ban, Saks and Jessica McClintock. Also, for your convenience, many of today's eye glass frame manufacturers also make clip-on sunglasses to fit their frames.
We offer hundreds of frame styles to choose from. Our frames range from the latest in designer eyewear to a value line of frames to suit any budget. Any one of our frames can be filled as sunglasses.

Do my kids need UV protection?

Sure they do! UV protection is very important for children because the crystalline lense in their eyes is clearer, making them more susceptible to retinal UV exposure. Later in life the lens tends to yellow and tends to block more UV to the back of the eye. Although most sunglasses are impact resistant, (as required by the FDA) they are not shatterproof. You may want to choose polycarbonate lenses for your child's sunglasses. Polycarbonate lenses are strong, durable and impact resistant. If your child does not tolerate sunglasses well, have him or her wear a hat to protect their eyes.

How do I know if my sunglasses are blocking UV?
Sunglasses made from quality manufacturers will say so. Some lenses are marked with the actual percentage of UV blocked, while others will say "maximum protection" which is hard to judge. Another idea when you are shopping for sunglasses is to look for polarized lenses to reduce glare.

What about contact lenses?
All of our disposable contact lenses come with UV protection.
